The Meritorious Mediator, John 17:1-5 sermon notes

The Meritorious Mediator

John 17:1-5

  • Review: Last time, we asked the question: Does God save?
    • The Answer: Yes! He saves! And He revealed it through this prayer of Jesus!
    • A Glimpse into:
      • Visionary: He lifts his eyes to heaven as if entranced by the Father! In his very presence!
      • Predictive: of the future of salvation, using present and past perfect tenses to describe things which have not yet happened.
      • Effective: he is actually praying for the salvation God planned form before the foundations of the world to come about!
      • Ill: rescue mission: “pray us in” makes it happen, Jesus prays in salvation!
        • Need: We are desperate to know this because…
        • We believe God is real! And we are sinners in need of reconciliation!
        • Even deniers of God, who say, “How can a just God do x, y, or z?” or, “How could a merciful loving God do x…?” Really when you say this, it means, “I know what justice and mercy are, and that If God is real he must be both, but I do not understand how they work together!”
        • Q: First, do you even measure up to your own expectations of justice or mercy?
          • >>>No Matter who you are, you deep down recognize there is a God, and want to know if he saves! Last week we saw how Jesus revealed that God saves, now we see how
          • This brings us the main question:
  • Main Q: How Does God Save!
    • Need: Many Christians know and hold that God saves, but they don’t know how!
    • Too important to get wrong!
    • Need knowledge to grow! No growth without new knowledge!
    • Need for certainty in this life and he next!
    • Need knowledge for confidence and bold clarity in articulating the Gospel to friends, family, your spouse and kids…
  • So, How does God Save?
    • By a mediator
    • Consider
    • V. 1 Strange Prayer, “Glorify me” 1b,  5b,
    • Tension: You don’t pray like this! You don’t teach your kids to pray like this!
      • B/c – it is so narcissistic! Prideful for us to say, O God reward me for y work!
      • B/c – It is so idolatrous, basically say, look at what I have done, O God!
      • But Jesus Did! Q: Why?
      • V.4a, “While on earth,” i.e. while temporarily on earth, not always here
      • v5b, Before the foundations of the earth, i.e. he existed prior, 24!
      • 1:1, Jesus was God the Word in the flesh! So, he had no sin, but he took on flesh!
      • Q: What was he doing down here?
      • A: He Became a Second Adam!
      • Q: What was Adam?
      • A: The Mediator: a representative, responsible for a group of people!
      • Rom 5:12-14, Adam was a “type” 14! A foreshadow of Jesus,
      • >>They have the same office/functionfirst Adam and Last Adam (1Cor 15:45)!
        • Principle:
        • Parties in the Cov: Lord commands and promises blessings and curses to a Mediator of a group
        • 2 Covenants with Jesus and Adam to represent bodies of people.
  • 1) The Eternal Word Became a Mediator! A second Adam!
    • Doxologize:
    • Segue: If Jesus is a mediator, what does he do?  Notice…
    • Gen 2:9, two trees with promises. 17, Command- don’t! 3:6, took and ate!
    • 3:6, Adam responsible for Eve, blamed in Bible, Hosea, Rom, and 1Cor… Illustrate…
    • Ill: Kids, who’s the boss of your family? Daddy, right? Daddy earns a living for you and your family, he acts on your behalf.
    • He is a mediator, representative, responsible…What he does affects you….
    • Rom 5:12, 6:23!>>>Our first daddy, Adam, earned sin and Death for all of us!
    • He was also a type of Christ! Who earned Eternal Life!
    • John 17:1b-2a, Glorify as [Kathos] you gave authority! Condition for glory is authority, responsibility like Adam’s! Gen 1:28
    • 4-5, Glorify me because I accomplished the work and glorified you!
      • 5b, before incarnation, did not need glory! Had it infinitely.
      • B/c he earned it while in the flesh!
    • Q: If Jesus is the mediator, what do mediators do?
  • 2) Mediator Merit!
    • Ill: Merit Badge: actions that deserve a due reward.
    • Rom 6:23, Adam earned death by sin, because God promised it!
    • 1Cor 15:21-22, Jesus earned Life! v22, Phil 2:7-11
  • App: That is How God saves! The Mediator Merited Salvation.
    • Certainty: God took salvation into his own hands! Not based on your own merit!
    • Elegance/Symmetry:
    • In Adam all die, in Christ we’re made alive!
    • In Adam’s sin came our sin, in Jesus’ work come our righteousness!
    • We are born in Adam, and reborn in Jesus!
    • The First Adam was a living soul, but the Last Adam is a Life giving Spirit!
    • The first Adam committed injustice and brought death, the last Adam died and brought justice!
      • Explains Justice and Mercy! The doubter can rest assured, God takes sin seriously, justice and mercy flow out in Jesus! Justice poured out on him on the cross, and mercy from him to us who believe! He takes it so seriously, he sent the Eternal Word to earn salvation!
      • App: Destroy false trusts: If God saves, How?
  • Segue: The real question is: So what!???,
    • IF Jesus did earn salvation, and pay for our sins by dying on the cross, what does it matter? Isn’t that a little abstract?
    • Certainly it is not everyone’s indiscriminately! (there would be no need for the institution of the church then…)
    • What does it mean to us today!? Notice…
    • V. 2b, Jesus “gives” His Life to his people!
    • Q: How do you know he gave you eternal life?
    • V. 3, His People are those who know the true God through him!
    • Term: Imputation: Ascribing, reckoning, attributing some quality to someone
    • blaming (neg: “Don’t impute that to me”),
    • Someone else’s action and consequences apply to you! Not just an effect, but you are responsible for them!
    • 2Cor 5:18-19, “Counting” = imputing…
      • Call: Trust in the Lord Jesus as your savior b/c…
  • 3) Jesus “Gives!” his merit to Believers!
    • App: the protestant reformation, the Bible, the Gospel all in a nutshell! We do nothing but trust because Jesus did everything!
    • Q: How do you know we got it right?
    • b/c need to know… Did Luther get it right?
      • Do we get this right when we preach? Share the Gospel with friends, family, spouse, kids?
      • Do we have it right for the sake of our own souls!
      • Tension: b/c stating that Faith alone, by grace alone, by no merit of our own, but only Jesus’ does not straddle a fence! There is no room for a finger in the grace pie and a finger in the works pie!
      • Mutual exclusivity: (works)+(grace) ≠ (Grace alone)!
      • I know some of you probably have a finger in both pies! Just in case!
      • Q: How do you know you got it right?
        • Jesus’ Prayer: v2-3! Glorify me, that I may give them eternal life!
        • The backbone of the Bible and the good news = We don’t earn Salvation because Jesus did!,
