Acts 16 Christ’s Sovereinghty Over Church Planting

Acts 16:6-10 Christ’s Rule of Church Extension

  • Intro to Topic:
    • Topic: Location of Mission Stations…
    • Ex: Choosing our location of meeting…  thought goes into it…
    • Q: Wouldn’t it be easier if Jesus just told us where to go in a vision?
    • Intro to Text
      • Outline: Jesus’ sovereignty over church planting location
        • 6-8 he forbids them to go back to Asia
        • 9-10 he shows them where to go in a vision..
        • Q: Wouldn’t that be nice?
  • Tension: Jesus only forbids when the church fails to break new ground!
    • 1:8, my witnesses … “to the… uttermost parts of the earth…”
    • Matt 28:19, “Go into the all the world and make disciples…”
    • Ex: The church stayed complacent in Jerusalem —the lord dispersed!
    • Ex: 15:36 Paul & Co. to go to Asia (where they had been)
      • 16:6-7 Jesus prevents them!
      • In verse 9-10 he tells them to go to new ground!
  • Int:>>>Jesus revealed his commission – Go!
    • When we fail to do so he pushes us out!
    • Intro to Point
      • Q: What causes this disobedience?
      • FCF: Complacency… Happy with the way things are… ignores Christ’s command!
        • Rooted in lack of love for the lost!
        • Lack of seriousness about the Great commissions in Mat 28 & Acts 1
          • Go make disciples… bear my witness
          • In all nations… to the uttermost parts of the earth…
          • For Lo I am with you… The Holy Spirit will overshadow you….
  • Thesis: Christ commands and empowers the church to break new-ground!
    • V 6-10 & When we fail to do so he sends us providentially!
  • Point: Break new ground…
  • Define Point
    • Point: Break new ground!
    • Define: Plant churches in areas where they are not.
      • Ex: Romans 15:19-20… “Not build on another man’s foundation…” v 28 Rome & Spain”
  • >>>Extensive versus Intensive Evangelism
    • Extensive = (extending the church outside its bounds)
      • i.e  Sending missionaries to new areas
      • Ex: Thessalonica  — Sounded for to whole world… 1Thess 1:8
      • Intensive = The Local church’s territory to whom they witness!
        • Ex:  4 years in Ephesus to the whole region! Including Colossae!
      • ***The Local Church must do both!
      • ***We must be Thessalonica and Ephesus….
  • Why? The Nations need the Gospel and Jesus calls us to it!
  • Ex: Our Text! Paul & co saw a man of Macedonia!   “Come help us!”
  • ***The nations cry out… “come over here and help us!”
  • Apply Point
    • ***Identify areas… persons to go…  preacher!
    • ***Get involved… as goer or sender
      • Ex: Antioch… some sent, some stay (Acts 13)
      • Mis and Obj:
        • Mis– “All must go to be real Christians…”
          • Ex: Finger on the Pulse… guy from SDCC… Ans: Finger on pulse as sender!
  • Mis: “Once a church is establish in size it should maintain that size… not send out”
    • Ans: that’s a church’s death sentence… that was the mentality of the church a generation ago. It failed….
    • The judgment of God is upon those congregations b/c they no longer exist!
  • Obj– “Planting right now means sending people out & we cannot afford that!” –
    • Ans: The Lord Jesus commands us to be about going and sending… people to the field… to break new ground…
    • The Lord empowers and elected his people there
    • Ex: High tide raises all ships … it is good for the church…
    • Conclude:
      • What not to expect from the Lord Jesus if we break new ground…
        • A voice from heaven… magical feeling… prophecy…
  • What to expect—
    • The church will emphasize faithfulness to the command not “Destiny…”
    • The Church will emphasize strategic new location over personal desire…
    • The church will rely on the Lord Jesus to bring in his elect !
  • Thesis: Christ promises to be with us, empower us, and call his elect in!
  • Point: He also commands us to go and be his instrument!
  • ***Let’s take up our part in the larger mission work of the church!
