This begins with a translation and some exegesis from the languages and then moves to the interpretation and application below.
1, Command for the Word Minister – Speak Sounds Doctrine
And you yourself speak [2s] what [PN-RPN use] is proper to sound doctrine [dative]
2, Direction for the Older Men – Sound in the Faith and Life
Old men [not presbuteros, but presbutas] are to be [PAinf-eimi] controlled-temper, dignified, with-mind [feeling with the intellect, reasoning], sound in the faith [same as v1], the love, the perseverance of the saints.
3-5, Direction for the Discipleship of Women
3, Older Women – teaching what is good
Old women like-them [like the old men, so same verbs] in reverent behavior [attrib]; not being enslaved [ptc.adv.fp] to much wine; rather beautifully-indoctrinating [ptc.adv]…
>>>Women are supposed to do as the men in dignity, faith, love, perseverance, reasoning, but also to add to that the beauty of femininity to their indoctrination.
>>>Women are to indoctrinate. Who is the student? Younger women. Notice the ellipses in the translation
4-5, Younger Women – learn to live to Honor the Word
…In order that they may urge [PAS3s] the teenage-women to be[inf.verbal-complement, eimi] husband-lovers, and child-lovers. …
>>>Notice ellipses, 3-5 is one sentence periodic
…reasonable [with-mind, see also verse 2, 3, all men and women are to be reasonable, not inflammatory in their minds], un-blemished [without-sin], house-working, good-deeds [the moral ethical good, distinct theme form kalos/beautiful-good], being subject [adv.ptc] to their own husbands; in order that the word of God may not be reviled-publicly.
>>>This Supplements the indoctrination relationship of husband to wife in Ephesian 5:22-27 as a wife is to be under her husband’s teaching and how a husband is to teach and wash his wife with the word. Here this structure is reinforced because the younger is taught to submit to her husband.
>>>older women are to indoctrinate the younger women in practical application of the Word of God to the lives of women.
4a, Husband lovers,
4b, child lovers
5c, House working – mastery of the home
5d, Doing good deeds
5e, being subject to husbands,
5f, realizing their public witness
>>>The public witness of the church is the underlined theme throughout all of Paul’s pastoral instructions to the household of God, in order to keep the Gospel from scandal, as he saw it was reviled in the lives of the Jews, Romans 2:24ff.
>>>In Paul, the church is a living organism as a public body, and our vocations as citizens are the womb in which the evangelistic and discipleship work happens. Paul is not specific about the venue of when this discipleship happens, but he is clear that it must.
***We must never separate the life we live in our secular vocations in isolation or compartmentalization from the grace of the Gospel freeing us from sin. cf. vv. 11-14, as Paul grounds our behavior in Salvation.
***Our private lives are in the realm of Christ’s Lordship and witness to the world. As his grace of salvation restores the natural world, family included, the witness of grace becomes evident to the world around us. This gracious restoration of the fallen and perverse world dramatizes the gospel to the fallen world.
***This is important because the fallen world sees our behavior first, and then deduces back from that what our religion is. They are not “reasoning’ as the christian is, realizing that there may be a disconnect from the teachings of the religion and the lives men and women live, but rather assume that all we do is an example of the religious devotion to which we adhere.
